The original Watts Hospital, c. 1908. Durham's first hospital, Watts Hospital opened in 1895 on the corner of Buchanan Blvd. (then Road) and Main Street. The main building (center) survives as a house at 302 Watts Street, only a block away from its original location. At the far left is the 1906 addition, built in response to the need for more space. The breezeways connecting the wards served as a conceptual model for similar connecting corridors at the west Durham location.
